Marta Arango recognized as Latin American Regional Social Entrepreneur 2009
at the World Economic Forum on Latin America

On April 15th, Marta Arango, Founder and Director General of the International Center for Education and Human Development (CINDE), was one of the four social entrepreneurs recognized as Latin American Regional Social Entrepreneur 2009 during the opening plenary session of the World Economic Forum on Latin America, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

With this award, the Schwab Foundation recognizes every year social entrepreneurs from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, India and South-East Asia for their outstanding achievements in economic, educational, environmental and social development, accomplished through social innovation and transformation. The award was given during the plenary session of the World Economic Forum in presence of President Lula of Brazil and President Uribe of Colombia.

The other social entrepreneurs awarded during the event were Veronica Abud from Chile (Fundación la Fuente), Martin von Hildebrand from Colombia (Gaia Amazonas) and Andre Cavalcanti de Albuquerque, Founder of Terra Nova, who had previously been recognized as Social Entrepreneur of the Year Brazil.

The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, an affiliate organization of the World Economic Forum, conducts the search and selection of social entrepreneurs all over the world, selecting 3-5 social entrepreneurs per year from each region. Selected social entrepreneurs are connected to the world’s business, political and media leaders through the events and initiatives of the World Economic Forum.
